Tokyo Narita (NRT/RJAA)

General info: Narita, also known as New Tokyo International, is Japan's main international airport. While Haneda is larger in terms of passenger numbers, generated almost entirely by domestic traffic, NRT is the gateway for international connections.

Airport layout: NRT has two passenger terminal buildings (T1 and T2).

Runway layout: 16L/34R 7200ft (2200m) and 16R/34L 13,100ft (4000m).

Spotting: NRT is very spotters-friendly. Both terminals have large observation decks. Terminal One's faces Runway 16R/34L while Terminal Two's faces 16L/34R. Furthermore there are a couple of good locations around the runways.

  • A - As Terminal One is located on the west side of the airport, the best pictures here can be taken during the morning hours.
  • B - The sun will be behind you in the afternoon, so that's the best time to take pictures from Terminal Two. There are two observation decks here.
  • C - Traffic on Rwy 16L/34R can best be viewed from the golf course area. There are more locations around this runway, but this area is a bit elevated and has a good clearance of the perimeter fence.
  • D - Sakura no Yama park offers views of the Rwy 16R threshold.
  • E - There are two good locations here: Hatake, next to the 34L threshold, and Sakura no Oka park just to the north.
  • F - The Aviation Museum has an indoor observation deck and an outdoor roof terrace with views of the Rwy 34L threshold, taxiways and southern aprons. A visit to this museum is interesting too of course.

NRT is a main hub for Japan Airlines and ANA All Nippon Airways. Both Northwest Airlines and United Airlines have a regional Asian hub here.
